Welcome back, creative friends! My name is Nancy and I love designing SVG cut files for crafty people with cutting machines like Cricut and Silhouette. I’m thrilled that you’re here because today, I’ll show you how to make your very own Unicorn Shadow Box.

What Is A Shadow Box?

Whenever I refer to my shadow box DIYs, they’re Cricut/Silhouette-made projects that consist of cut-out cardstock layered on top of each other to create an intricate and detailed design.

Take a look at my Paris Shadow Box – it’s one of my most popular designs and even uses a backlight to give it a beautiful glow!

What Supplies Do I Need To Make My Very Own Unicorn Shadow Box?

Be sure to gather the following supplies to make a unicorn shadow box with your Cricut or Silhouette:

Unicorn Shadow Box SVG file

Cricut, Silhouette, or other cutting machine

Cardstock in different colors

Grip mat

Wedding tools

Double-sided foam tape

9×9 shadow box frame

Distress Oxide

Glue gun and sticks

LED light strips

What Kind Of Grip Mat Do I Need When Cutting Cardstock?

When cutting cardstock, it’s always best to use a light grip mat. Using anything with a stronger grip (ie.: standard and above), you’ll risk ripping and tearing your cardstock when removing it from the mat.

How To Make A Unicorn Shadow Box

Follow these easy steps to make your very own unicorn-themed shadow box – all with the help of your cutting machine!

Step 1: Download Your Unicorn SVG File

Log onto your VIP Crafters Club dashboard to gain access to download the SVG to this unicorn Cricut craft (and it can also be used for Silhouette machines!). You can also use this link to download the individual SVG.

Step 2: Upload To Your Cutting Machine’s Program

Next, upload the SVG to your cutting machine’s program. You will see that the layers are set out from left to right – and this is the order you will want to place each cardstock layer. Working from left to right, the top layer is the design that’s on the top row to the very left. The most bottom layer is the design that’s on the bottom row, to the right.

Step 3: Resize The Design

Resize each layer of your design to fit the inner section of your shadow box. For our 9×9 frame, we adjusted each layer to be 8 inches by 8 inches.

Step 4: Cut Your File!

Now your file is ready to cut. You may use the same color cardstock as suggested in the cut file. Follow your cutting file program’s directions to cut your designs.

As your cutting each layer, be sure to keep them in the correct order! Weed out any small pieces where necessary.

Step 5: Add Distress Oxide To The Appropriate Layers

Add Distress Oxide to your layers according to the following directions:

• Pink Distress Oxide on the solid pink layer
• Grey Distress Oxide on the cloud layer
• Green Distress Oxide on the grass pieces

Step 6: Glue The Individual Pieces

Glue all the remaining individual pieces with your hot glue gun

Step 7: Get Your Shadow Box Ready

To prep your shadow box, turn it over (glass facing down), and open its backing. Using your scraper, remove the canvas-covered pad that’s attached to the back.

Step 8: Layer The Cardstock Designs

To start the layering process, add the foam tape along the edges of the front of the bottom layer. Add the next cardstock design. Continue doing this until you reach the top design (and do not add foam tape to the final layer).

Step 9: Add The LED Lights

Add the LED light strips along the inner edges of your shadow box. Trim where necessary.

Step 10: Insert The Design Into The Frame

Add the cardstock layers into the frame and place back the backing.
