How to Make Dalgona Coffee – Korean Whipped Coffee Drink

Are you a coffee drinker? I love a good cup of coffee, but I usually feel like I have to choose between making it myself (boring coffee) or buying it at Starbucks (expensive coffee). Well, spoiler alert – Dalgona Coffee is a fancy coffee that you can make with INSTANT coffee.

I was recently told by a friend of mine that I’m not a “serious coffee drinker” because I use instant coffee crystals. “A serious coffee drinker uses a French press” she said.

A French Press? Cue the “Ain’t nobody got time for that” meme.

I drink tea most of the time (London Fog: black tea with milk and sugar), so I use my hot water kettle a lot. And when I DO drink coffee, it is really convenient to just heat up some water and add some coffee crystals and creamer!

And anyway… for me, the coffee isn’t the best part of coffee. The cream, sugar, caffeine and comfort are the things I’m really after!

So if I AM drinking coffee, it better be sweet, creamy, and convenient.

OH. And I also like to feel fancy whenever possible. And a cup of boring instant coffee really isn’t all that fancy.

Enter Dalgona Coffee! Instant Coffee made fancy!! Finally a convenient coffee that meets all of my criteria!

What is Dalgona Coffee?

Dalgona Coffee is a sweet and smooth, creamy whipped coffee. It is sweet, creamy, convenient and it’s even super fancy!

And the best news is that you can make this at home with just three ingredients! Instant coffee (yay!), sugar (also yay! Or you can also use other sweeteners) and hot water (easy!).

How to Make Dalgona Coffee

Just measure 2 tablespoons of each of the 3 ingredients (instant coffee crystals, sugar or sweetener and hot water) into a bowl. Then whisk or blend for about 5-6 minutes until peaks begin to form. You can use a whisk, a hand mixer or a stand mixer – pretty much any of these works!

Five minutes isn’t a long time, but you might be tempted to rush it. Just be patient! You’ll notice the color and texture gradually change and when it’s ready it will look like this:

That’s it! Were you expecting more steps?

It is really easy to make and you can serve the creamy whipped coffee mixture on top of some iced milk or steamed milk (or just boil the milk in a pan). So easy and so yummy!

You can substitute to the sugar for most other sweeteners, so you can easily make a low carb Keto-friendly version of this drink. You can also serve this over almond or coconut milk to make it vegan.

And if you have kiddos, be sure to check out this kid-friendly Dalgona “coffee” (it’s not really coffee, it’s chocolate!)
