Ahh the unicorn craze. It’s not going away anytime soon! So let’s just embrace the adorable, magical unicorniness of unicorns.
If you’re here looking for a super EASY unicorn cake, you’re in the right place! I know this cake looks like it was made by a professional cake decorator, but this cake is easy enough for a beginner! With just a few inexpensive toppers from Amazon (shhh… don’t tell anyone you had a little help!), you’ll have a full blown Unicorn Cake that looked like you hired a professional cake decorator.
This Easy Unicorn Cake is not only a breeze to make but itโs absolutely magical! Each sweet slice is covered with homemade vanilla frosting and boasts different colored cake layers.
Serve this during a unicorn-themed party and trust me, itโll be a hit! Your guests will be utterly impressed with all of its unicorn magic (and yumminess!).

Ingredients for the Cake:
- 2 boxes of white cake mix
- 8 large egg whites
- 2 cups water
- 1 cup canola oil
- Yellow, pink and orange gel food coloring
- 3 9-inch round cake pans
- 1 10-inch round cake board
Ingredients for the Vanilla Frosting:
- 3 cups unsalted butter, softened
- 6 cups powdered sugar
- 5 tbsp heavy whipping cream
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- Yellow, pink, orange, green gel food coloring
- 4 medium piping bag with star tip
- 1 small piping bag with a leaf tip
- 4 medium mixing bowls
- 1 package of Wilton floral icing transfers
To Decorate:
Cake directions:
Preheat oven to 350 and spray cake pans with cooking/baking spray.
Add all cake ingredients to a large bowl (except for the food coloring) and use an electric mixer to beat until smooth.
Divide the cake batter into 3 bowls
Add 2-3 drops of yellow food coloring into one bowl and mix to get a pale yellow color.
Mix in 2-3 drops of pink food coloring into the second bowl and mix until thoroughly tinted.
Mix in 2-3 drops of orange food coloring into the second bowl and mix to get a pale orange color.
Pour each batter into their own cake pan
Place into the oven and back for 28-32 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Allow to cool completely on a wire rack.
Frosting directions:
Using a standing mixer, beat all ingredients (except for the gel food colors) until well-combined. You will want the frosting to be smooth but form stiff peaks.
Scoop 1 cup of frosting into each of the 5 medium bowls
Add a few drops of pink gel food coloring into one of the bowls. Mix and then scoop into a piping bag with a star tip.
Mix in a few drops of yellow gel food coloring into the second bowl, mix and scoop into a piping bag with star tip.
Mix in a few drops of orange gel food coloring into the second bowl with the 1 cup of frosting and scoop into a piping bag with star tip.
Mix in a few drops of green gel food coloring into the second bowl with the 1 cup of frosting and scoop into a piping bag with the leaf tip.
Scoop the remaining white frosting into the last piping bag with a star tip.
To Assemble the Cake:
Place one cake layer onto a cake board. Trim the dome off the top of the cake to make an even layer
Repeat the first step with other two layers.
Scoop 1 cup of white frosting onto the bottom layer and spread evenly.
Place the second cake layer on top and spread another cup of frosting on top.
Next, place the last layer of cake on top.
Use the remaining white frosting and frost entire cake.
Using the white, pink, yellow and orange piping bag (with star tip attachment), start piping the unicornโs hair on the top and around one side of the cake to create a beautiful, colorful โmane.โ
Place the horn, ears and eyes onto the cake.
Using the piping bag with the green frosting, randomly pipe petals into the flowers.
Place the icing transfers randomly into the hair.
Place into the fridge to harden the frosting – then serve and enjoy!
