Hey everyone! Today I am super excited to share with you this awesome technique of adding deco foil to your Cricut and Silhouette projects! I am obsessed with using deco foil!! In fact, I have “deco foiled” everything from shirts to greetings cards – but today we are applying this to this fun and colorful canvas book bag!
I am using my “Book Nerd” design which I had fun creating for my VIP Crafters Club members! Not a member? Click here to learn more about our amazing community where you get tons of exclusive new cut files and we make a new project together each month!
Deco Foil comes in all different colors. On this project I am using the rainbow deco foil, but you can use whatever you like! It uses heat and requires some type of adhesive or way to bond with your surface. There are different methods to do this, but today I am using Siser EasyWeed Adhesive as my adhesive (not to be confused with adhesive vinyl, which is completely different!).
EasyWeed Adhesive is basically a heat-activated iron-on glue – you use it just like a regular heat transfer vinyl (HTV), except it is JUST the adhesive without the vinyl on top. It is basically a sheet of glue that becomes activated (sticky) once it becomes heated. Then once activated, we will press a sheet of our amazing Deco Foil on top of the design and VOILA! It becomes a beautiful, striking and vibrant project that you’ll be proud to carry around! And it is acid free and washable on fabrics (see tips below) – sweet! Read on to learn everything you need to know to create this awesome project!
For this deco foil bag, you’ll need a Cricut Machine, a Cricut Easy Press (An iron works, too!), and a few other tools to complete this ultra cute project.

- Cricut (Explore Air, Maker or Joy would work) or Silhouette Cameo Cutting Machine
- Cricut Easy Press or Iron
- Weeding Tools
- EasyWeed Adhesive
- Canvas Bag (I used this one from Chalk Couture)
- Deco Foil Transfer Sheet in Color: Rainbow (or color of your choice)
- Book Nerd SVG Cut File
Begin by gathering all the necessary materials and then load the “Book Nerd” file into Cricut Design Space. Once uploaded, adjust the height of the image to 6 inches. Select the entire image and select the attach button. Select the Make It button.
Watch the Video (How to Use Deco Foil):
Move on to the next screen and select the mirror slider on the Cricut Mat. Place your adhesive htv shiny side down onto the mat. Follow the directions in Design Space to begin the cutting process – for your material, you may select “Everyday Iron On.”
Once the design is cut out on the vinyl, use the weeding tool to remove any unnecessary pieces. Place the vinyl down on the canvas bag so that you can read the letters. (The clear carrier sheet should be on top.)
Turn on the Easy Press and heat to 275 degrees – set the time to 10-15 seconds. If you decide to use an iron instead, set it to its nylon/low setting. Next, place a sheet of parchment paper or a pillowcase over the vinyl image. Press the vinyl in place with the Easy Press or iron. Once that is done, you may slowly remove the clear backing material.
Place the deco foil transfer sheet over the newly heated adhesive vinyl. Press the foil with the easy Press or iron for an additional 10-15 seconds. Once complete, allow the foil to cool completely. Then, carefully peel away the deco foil sheet to reveal your shiny new image. Enjoy your new bag!
- Since deco foil is a cold peel, it must be completely cooled before removing.
- Try to make the foil as flat as possible and press firmly to adhere well to the adhesive vinyl.
- Don’t forget to mirror your image before cutting (just like you would with iron-on – AKA heat transfer vinyl or HTV)!
- To wash, I recommend washing by hand in cold water. If you’d like to use your machine, you can turn inside out and use a “delicate” cycle using cold water and hang dry or tumble dry low.
